Anyway... another question... to continue the China theme... I have those cams that I bought from China along with the cables.. You know the regular type they sell.... 2 power + video... pretty thin cables , had problems connecting to my power box... the shielding is , looks. aluminum... My cams are connected via BNC connectors... The question... I read someting about those video baluns (active/passive). As I have good(I think ) cams; all 5 Effio 700Tv Lines with OSD etc and Dahua 1U DVR , I am not really happy with the picture quality... should there be something else betwee the cam /DVR connection to improve the video quality??

It's possible the problem is just the cameras ("Effio 700TVL" doesn't mean anything on its own), although the cables sound pretty low quality.

 

Baluns are designed for use with twisted-pair or similar wire, for example, to use network cabling instead of coaxial/power wire. Using UTP and baluns may be an improvement over the cheap included cables... but it won't help the image if the cameras are crap.

yes a good cable. these cheap cable kits are usless in both getting power to camera and a clean signal.

 

cat5 with baluns or coax with power will give better images.

As suggested, look at Hybrid DVRs. A couple of important specs to drill down to are how many MP/channel they support (and whether all channels support the same), and what the total MP supported by the box is. Some inexpensive hybrids will support higher MP on channel 1, and limit it on the rest of the channels, often to as little as 1.3 MP.

 

An alternative is to build or buy a PC based DVR with a hybrid capture card, which can have a lot more flexibility. Aver's hybrid cards work pretty well, though they need a decently powerful CPU if you're going with very many cams.

My daughter's house was rigged by a CCTV security company... having checked the equipment used there I found mostly the same stuff(except for the Siamese cables)... the cams look pretty cheap etc..

So is the stuff I have been using really crap, or , maybe I need something else..

As a musician (I play guitar) so I am not a novice in cables... I have a lot for my pedals and mikes...

 

This CCTV stuff fascinates me, along with some beefed up security for my house, I may get some new knowledge.

hi yes it is bad. for what power your cameras listed uses then its not good enough. also ohms wise.

 

if you want to see a big improvement then swap all your cables

hi if you are thinking of going hybrid then your only choice is cat5.

gahua hybrid is a bit of a slow seller. (its expensive) and is limited to cameras. and for the cost of the 16 (with 4 ip)
