1394, 1394b external storage

Recommended Posts

I am looking for a alternate method of storing video. currently using network enclosures with no big issues. Does anyone have experience with external Firewire enclosures?

- distance is restricted to 6ft? How far can you push it?

- locally power or power via the data cable itself. seems there are all sorts of different models out there as far as power? ie. ac adapter, ps2 cable, usb cable.

what I am looking for is a 1394 external storage enclosure that is power from the server and is extended further than 6ft if possible.

I have had several hard drive enclosures. My newest favorite one is a Venus DS3 made by AMS I believe.

It has silent fan, very small foot print and durable. They have USB 2.0 or Combo Firewire 1394A and USB 2.0. USB will give you maximum of 34MBps while Firewire will give you 40MBps.

USB 2.0 you cant run cable up to 5 meters, if that is an option.

I bought my enclusre at www.newegg.com, no affilation, just a computer junkie.
