Picking out a prepackaged system

Recommended Posts

If you can suggest a good place to get a system. I want a good IP, POe, IR system with 7-8 outdoor cameras, one I will have to have 600-700 of cable to get to the gate, and 3-4 indoor cameras. Common and fairly easy for a DIYer. Good night vision.

How about these?

Only the first item is IP/NVR. The last 2 is SDI & you will need extender device with both SDI & IPC if your camera to the gate is 600-700 feet.

Glad I asked. Can use a PTZ for that gate camera, or will the complicate the power supply?

No, if IP PTZ you won't even need a separate pair of cable to control via RS485. Do you have power source near the gate?

No power at the gate, I have to get a separate electrical service, transformer and meter. I won't be doing that until I get a power gate.

Most PTZ cameras require a 12-24V power supply or a high power mid-span to power it. ACTi will be coming out with a small 10X PTZ that runs of a standard PoE switch in January/February time frame but 600-700 away is pretty far and not sure 10x is enough. In that same time frame, if you need longer distance reach, they will have a 1080P 30x zoom (not pan/tilt) with a staged IR illuminator that may work for you.

I did run into one booth at the ASIS show last week that was interesting. They sell a PoE switch that can reach 200m (just about your limit) that does not require anything special at the remote end, treat it like a regular PoE switch and the price was reasonable. They had a demo with 200m of wire coiled up at the show with a camera running. If you are interested in it, let me know. I thought about importing them as a specialty item, not sure what the interest would be.

I want to put in the Cat5e in now for the 600' to gate, before the ground freezes. What kind of cable do I need to use? Conduit?

How does the extender work?

Put in Cat6 foil shielded burial grade solid wire Ethernet cable and put it in schedule 40 PVC conduit, it's what we do on our long runs. If you don't like the idea of a long range PoE switch, you can get extenders. We use Veracity Cat6 extenders good for 2,600' but our longest run is only 1,600'.

If I need a $230 extender or a PTZ will work without an extender, I might as well get a PTZ. right? How else can I power a PTZ?

But even if I have to get 120v service to the gate 585' away, I could put the $230 towards the service.
