How much data does a 3mp stream at?

Recommended Posts

I might have to install some of my axis p3346 cameras using exacq edge server software over 4g, any idea how to calculate how much data they stream at? They only use data when viewing live or recorded data right? There not pushing video otherwise right?

A 3MP camera would generate about 10 Mbit per seconds for its compressed bit stream, 30 FPS real time for its main video recording. You also have options to control its bit rates, by lowering its recorded video quality as a trade off.

They may be providing another bit stream -so called, sub stream for much smaller bit stream for a reduced frame rate & smaller video size. That is useful for remote viewing over a public, wide area network environment.

Many IP cams let you set the bit rate, which will determine how much data they stream if you use a constant bit rate. With CBR, resolution and frame rate don't matter in terms of data, only in terms of image quality.

If you use variable bit rate, it'll depend on how the cam's firmware implements that, and you'll have to test it to know for sure. This will change depending on visual complexity, amount of motion, and day vs night.
