Contingency - record images to more than 1 DVR

Recommended Posts

Anyone out there who has his camera images being recorded onto more than 1 DVR as a form of back up if one DVR fails?

Is this recommended?

Ive seen it .. nothing wrong with it .. nice to use a PC DVR and a unit like a GE Stand Alone together .. the GE embedded RTOS Unit as a backup

What is required to split into parallel input lines? Some junction box or just a small splitter device?

Would there be a drop in image quality?

You could use a BNC-T split if the runs between the DVR's were very short, however with any additional connectors in the cable path video quality is reduced by a little bit. You would be safer having the video plug into the input of a video distribution amp then the outputs to DVR's.

If you are willing to spend the money to have a redundant DVR, the cost of a quality distribution amp would be insignificant.

If you are using a stand Alone DVR they already come with Loop throughs (at least any decent one)... so dont need T-Connectors .. also for example GeoVision PC DVR has an optional Loop through card ... if you want the PC DVR the first one in line ..

The other option is to use the functions in the Geovision Control room software, you simply buy a cheap headless pc and stick it in the roof (with correct ventilation of course), then you run a cross over cable to the Geo box and wire a sinlg e I/O inpt to your alarm keypad, this means when you leave at nigth or arm your system the keypad tells the geo to send all files to the control room, on either motion detection or actual alarm activation of your security device (alarm system), the advantage is less labour (1 wire) no need for Distribution Box, no need for second DVR, very easy to back up from, just use remote desktop and a second crossover cable or wireless which is even better. (Mind you I have a thing about being hard wired).

The most important thing is it is not OBVIOUS as to what is going on!
