GeoVision, any 4 channel model.

However, cant say I would want Vista as the OS for a DVR, but then again sooner or later we will have no choice anyway when XP goes for good

Can you recommend any model with 4 channel? I am looking to buy eMachine, with Pentium dual core at 3.00ghz, 1G memory.

Not willing to spend more than $200 on DVR card.

For less than $200 you are stuck with either the GV-600-4 or GV-250-4. 600 has 30fps total while the 250 has 15fps total.

Emachine; I would recommend against that, as typically they have very generic motherboards, but if you do, make sure it has an Intel Chipset if possible. Sometimes other Chipsets work with the GV-250 and GV-600, but not all the time. To prevent any unknown errors its always best to stick with the Intel Chipsets. If you know the model of the Emachine, please post it if you dont already know the chipset.

No prob.

Its got an intel chipset (945G) hence the onboard Intel Graphics. Only issue I see is it uses the older Pentium Dual Core, while for the $550 retail price tag, you can typically build a Decent 2.4-2.6 Core 2 Duo for that same price.

Regardless of that, it will certainly work. Just note the Pentium Dual Cores get extra hot, compared to the new Core 2 Dual Cores. Once its located in a cool area it will be fine though, otherwise you may need to add additional cooling fans. I used an Emachines case before for a DVR, with an MSI 945G Motherboard, actually the only problem I had with the case itself was the cooling, but then I just added an extra fan. I also had switched the Power Supply for a name brand unit but then Ive also used cheaper ones before in the past without problem, just get a Voltage Regulator if possible.

The basic answer is yes, it uses the 945G chipset which many have and still do use for DVRs. Personally Ive used Asus and MSI with that chipset and even ran the GV-1120 on it with the onboard video only.

GeoVision says it works now, with their latest version 8.12. I havent used it on Vista myself, not a big fan of Vista myself.

The general view among computer technicians is that there is no purpose to Vista as yet.

I would not be a good idea to create a security device with untested technology.

I know government departments that only adopted the Windows 2000 range in 2005 and XP/2003 in 2007.

If thats anything to go by, Vista will be rolled out in secure envirnoments in 2009/2011

XP is selling better than it has for years I hear.

Vista comes pre-installed and people are buying XP to replace it.

Dell and Acer were given financial incentives to adopt Vista early. Now they are going back to giving the consumer a choice between XP and Vista.

The people have spoken

mmm rant over.

/me wanders off waving his red flag and singing socialist songs.

Man these painkillers are good!

Rory one last question,

I bought the computer, 19 inch screen, 4 cameras, and will be buying GV-600. What else do I need to complete the surveillance system?

Dont know which cameras, but you need Cable and Power for the cameras. I would also get a UPS with AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulation) for the whole system, APC and Triplite are good brands.

If they are box cameras they also need a lens, and a mount or housing.

I am a tech for a CCTV company and we had a few customers demand thier pc based dvr's shipped with Vista, the new version of geovision software (8.1.2) does work with vista.

It seems to work fine, I got it out of the shop as fast as I could though. I asked the salesmen to call the customer back and see if they were sure they wanted vista and they wouldn't budge on not having the latest OS
