Running cable across/through cement walkway to wall ?

Recommended Posts

Building's perimeter is completely surrounded by 7ft wide concrete walkway that butts up to the exterior wall where the cables need to enter. Tunneling under the concrete walkway is not an option. I've been told I would need to saw cut the concrete a few inches deep about 4" away from a cold joint board, then lay the conduit in the channel and patch it.

Anyone have any experience with something like this? I just want to make sure I get all the ideas I can before I saw cut the channel.

Much appreciated

Yes, 1 foot wide by 19" deep

Place crushed gravel then conduit the sand and top soil.... compact it down the re-pour cement...

I recommend that you place 1" bigger conduit than you need (future-proof)

Here's a lower cost/small footprint tunneling option.

The Borzit is a telescopic boring/tunneling tool.

A 1/2" drill such as Milwaukee hawg, garden hose, and threaded pipe is required.

Drilling a hole through the wall at below grade is not recommended.

Keep all wall penetrations 6" min above grade to avoid water infiltration problems.

Pvc conduit is recommended to keep cables dry. If possible, go big.

I use a 12" gas powered, water cooled Stihl cutoff saw for concrete cutting.

In a jam, I've used 5" angle grinder with diamond blade.

Don't forget the safety glasses and dust mask.

A helper with shop vac to help suck dust while cutting is key.

If a control/expansion joint is nearby, just widen to 1" by 2" deep using angle grinder/diamond blade.

Use concrete chisel and mallet to clear channel.

Install direct burial cable/conduit and fill channel with flexible concrete crack/filler sealer.

Thanks guys, very helpful. I already have a Bosch rotary hammer that can chisel out the channel once cut...just need to rent the concrete saw from the local equipment rental shack, and I already have an angle grinder and diamond blade on standby.
