    dropped frames in playback

I looked at the post from 7 Jan in requards to dropped frames. And I will try the reccommended fixes. I have a system using 1480 board 16 cams 1 gig of internal memory and 500 gig storage. The system is in a school and the activity tends to be all the cameras for a few min and then none or very little. I have set max frame rates to 10 and have set pre and post record for a couple of seconds ea. They are still having people dissappear from a clip and then reappear. Also playback is jerky. I am supposed to be getting a clip which hopefully I can post. These systems are running 8.02 THey cameras are being viewed live off from the server using a belkin KVM switch. I have this setup in several places and it does not seem to affect the system as it is just getting video that would normally be fed to a monitor.

    Access control on the cheap

we are just getting into access control and have gone to using a locksmith to actually installing the door hardward electric strike etc. What we are finding on commercial stuff is you have to be careful as some of the opening devices can be really expensive. On some of the school doors whe have done the door hardware to electrify the latches etc runs 700-800 dollars not to mention the rip off prices for the "manufactures' power supply" but that is how we have to quote stuff as the liability if a device fails could be a major problem.

    DSL and 2-line phones

If you do have an alarm their should be a rj-31x or similar so the alarm can get the line ahead of any other analog device phone fax etc
  4. Another thing we use a lot is a length of plastic conduit usually 1/2 inch it only costs a couple of buck is flexible enough to bounce over junk in the ceiling and when you forget and leave it on the job osr break it trying to fish through something no big deal. nylon string and a lenght of light chain are very usefull too if you have to fish a wall drop the chain down and you will soon know if it is fire stopped or unfishiable.

    DSL and 2-line phones

run from the network to the dsl modem. If you have to put a filter on your phones be aware that the filters are set up for line one that is the center two pins of a rj11 jack. If the dsl is on line two the filter may not work. if you have a fax line that is better to use as a dsl line.

    Intel dumps Dell

I have built a lot of pcs when I was a tech person at a school but I don't now because i am some what concerned about warrentee. If I have a bad video card I have to deal with that supplier a bad harddrive it could be from another supplier etc. I think maybe purchasing a barebone box with motherboard/ memory and harddrive installed and tested may be a fair comprise then you can add your custom OS etc.

    Uses for J Hooks

Well I don't think their is any spek on using them on coax but we try to avoid on any finished product because if you add a cable then all the ty wraps get cut and have to be redone or they just add additional ones. Enrico makes a j hook with a little plastic keeper that will hold cables in place. We have also gotten dinged for not using plenum ty wraps if it is a plenum job. Not a big deal it was only a couple and we could change them. They do make a plenum ty wrap but it you use the steel j hooks they are cheaper. We have not done this yet but if you buy velcro in quanity you can get your name/logo printed on it.
  8. take a look at the Vitek day night bullet cams the IRD 32 seems to do a good job.

    Uses for J Hooks

We use them a lot if you ever have to add cable it makes it really easy. Just size them so you have a little extra capacity. We run a lot of cat5 and tie wraps for cable support are a no no. over time you can get a kink in the cable and it will not pass the higher speed certification tests.
  10. we sometimes use a telepole and make a z on the end of it you can then take your weight i.e. tennis ball with a few bolts inserted and just place it in the correct V the tennis ball works well because you and roll it a bit on a flat beam. the z on the telepole works well because you can catch the wiree and push the ball back through the triangle if you get the wrong one.

    ISC West 2007

I am going this year for a couple of days. have resloved to throw out all the catalogs etc that I picked up 2 years ago and start fresh.
  12. In a stressfull situtaion such as a robbery it is nice to tell if the person had a blue coat or a green one etc. Plus if the person is activitly monitoring they are much more likely to see movement with a color monitor than a b.w image. ( Seems like sombody did a study on that but can't rmember where i saw it probably on this forum)
  13. Big differences on new const vs rework or add ons. Leave slack at camera end for sure. Customer always seems to want something moved a couple of feet. ID camera and cable and keep a chart as you go. tag the camera with date and we even use a single brady label to see what the camera number is without having to remove ceiling tiles or take the camera apart. We usually embed all the wire then terminate both ends. We don't usually test coax but all cat5 is tested. J hooks and velcro on final product.
  14. Big reason we make everything ourselves is as someone said pulling through conduit etc. You damage the end you have to install one anyway. Another big issue is if the job calls for Plenum cable. I have not seen premade in plenum. Almost all our school jobs are Plenum. It is also easy to keep a roll of Siamese on the truck and cut it to length where with premade you have to carry various length and then what do you do with the excess? We are also trying to limit the different sizes of BNC connectors we stock.

    Cabling Estimates

We are in the wire pulling business and it is pretty hard to estimate some jobs. We always are pretty close on the cable pull wire requirements but getting the hours correct is difficult. We just installed 4 cameras at a site and the cable pull ran almost 3000.00 it required lift rental and you just could not get from point a to b. We have lost some jobs but I try to leave some extra as sometimes the employees have more trouble than anticipated.

    Problems with octupus cable

Does anybody know if their is a third party mfg of that same type of cable. It would be nice to have a more rugged setup. The customer looks at that tangle of wires and wonders. We try and make everything neat but sometimes you have to be so careful with the wires that you have a bit of a mess. I am keeping a couple of sets of cables in stock

    more password problems

I know this was covered back in Nov but did not see a definitive answer. I have a customer who had a admin password issued to an employeewho has since departed. I have an admin account on the machine Ver 7.05 but I cannot get in to get rid of or disable the other admin account. Any ideas if someone wants to PM me that would be fine also. I don't want to reload this whole system if I can avoid it.

geo losing connection to the network

I have a geovision 1480 system that loses its connection to the lan. I am planning on changing nics and will check all patch cables etc. I am just wondering if anyone else has had any machines that will connect fine allow remote viewing etc for a while and then lose connection and not be able to reconnect until system is rebooted. Thanks

    GV interface with access control

I am trying to interface a gv-800 ver 8.0 with a keyscan access control system I have the io box and the relay board but when I look at the geo docs it tell how to output a relay to a set of pins to turn off either monitoring or alarms which is fine. the problem is how to you ractivate monitoring or alarms without going to the geo sever. What I want to do is have a valid user be able to come to a building which has monitoring and notification on and be able to resent his card which will let him into the building do what he needs to do and then present his card at the reader on the way out to reactivate the geo system. In other words I don't want the maintance guy to have any access or need to get on the geo system. Sorry for the long post Thanks

    RG59 BNC Compresion Connectors

You also have to be sure you have the proper 2 piece connector for the size of cable we have to stock at least three different sizes one for standard rg 59 one for rg6 and one for "new generation sized cable also plenum cable sometimes is a different diameter
  21. We did a big install for a school system and the local paper came and did a big front page article showed the access control and camera system only thing they left out was our name as the contractor and designer! They even had a color screen shot of a 16 cam geovision in the high school. So much for free publicity
  22. Look in a panavise catalog they have a camera mount that attaches to a 3/4 conduit so you can have any length you want
  23. we pull a lot of cat 5 and phone wire and and two pieces of equipment get used on almost every job. a length of plastic conduit to use as a push pull rod cheap flexible and you don't much care if it gets damaged or lost. I also always carry a length of chain and some nylon 200# line. If I have to fish a wall I tie on to it with the nylon and drop the chain in the wall I can tell if I have a fire stop and I can work the chain up and down to get down the wall. When I am sure I am to the bottem I just cut in my opening and hook the line. A lot better than wrestling with a fish tape.
  24. Does this have an outdoor houseing?
  25. I have three gv systems installed at a customers they are all 1480 units only about 4 months old they are running 8>01 upgraded from 7.05 they have a min of 40 gig room on storage area and full 10 gig on C: when the customer tries to view log files system will not let him in he reboots and everthing is fine for a while then the problem reoccures. Will going to 8.02 solve this? systems have appropiate mem and video cards 1 gig and ati vid cards with 256 mem on video card System seems fine otherwise Thanks
