It will mostly depend on your dvr. Does it have audio inputs? For the camera you want to pair it with? Do you have a separate mic? You will need one, and it will need to be independently amplified and powered. or were you thinking some other audio source, and editing it in after... bloopers laughtrack?

Yes, the sensativity of the mic will determine how close it needs to be to the viewed area. Be warned that you willpick up a lot and I mean a lot of ambient sounds in most cases. Be sure to check with local municipality to determine legality of recorded sound with video also. Some areas have very strict regulations regarding audio often tighter than video.

also make sure the mic is outdoor rated. most are not.

you would connect the mic to the audio input for the designated camera or audio in if only one channel of audio is possible. Depending on the dvr, where the settings are and how it is done. Usually In the dvr setup, you would select the camera you want to associate the audio with and turn audio on or assign it to that camera there.

It sounds like you need a door intercom system like this:

http://www.etsnm.com/pdfs/mic-spkr.pdf

if you have the camera in place separately, you might consider a door peephole camera.

there are also door intercoms with video integrated but most use the phone system. Others here on the forum would be better at advising for this setup.

Also search the forum discussions for it, I do remember some conversation about this on the forum earlier.

Good Luck

Please check the Federal and state laws regarding sound recording. The "bad guys" may end up owning you!

Live listening should be OK.

There is nothing wrong with audio. It is what you do with it after you RECORD audio that gets you in to trouble.

When security is of the essence the audio is a tool.

If a burglar has a mask, then perhaps you can identify him/her with their voice. Do they speak with an accent? Do they have a lisp, or a speech impediment?

Yes it is true I could go in to a dept store with a cam corder, and I can reach under a dressing stall with the cam corder, and I will only get a ticket to appear in court, and I probably will not get arrested if there is nothing else in my background.

If I have the audio turned on then I can be arrested for a felony!

If you have signage for a business, or a residential, then you should be covered.

What is the chain of custody for recorded audio? You cannot have a mom n pop sub shop, and then let the employess have access to the audio to play back scenes for their friends, that would be a violation of one privacy.

There used to be alot of "rules" against of recording on the outside of a residence with cameras, and mics, Too many police officers have been caught saying things that they as professionals should not be saying.

There are a couple of cases that has set precedence. One is out of New Jersey. This officer really put himself in to a stink with his threats to a father to an individual who was to be arrested. The officer did not know that the cameras had mics. The father took the recordings to the police station, and this officer is now looking for a new job.

At first the police dept went down to the residence, and ripped out all of the cameras, and they took his DVR also.

The judge made the dept give him back everything, and reclassified the recordings to be legal, and to allow them as evidence in the trial.

There will be some new laws hitting the books such as how far off a residential property one can record audio, and other such "detail".

The stuff that is taking up so much debate are the internet problems that "minor audio issues" seem to be taking a back seat.

This is stuff that should have been taken care of a long time ago, but that have to spend every day debating "lawyer legalease".

This is 08, and they are finally getting around to these!! How long has the internet been around?

If you are looking for something in particular that you need to record then it can get really expensive, and quick.

You may need to run the audio through a compressor, and/or and an equalizer.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_compressor

If you have ever listened to an American football game, and you are listening to the commentary, then you will notice when they stop talking, then you will notice that the people in the stands will sound crystal clear, and the presence of them is heard perfectly. You can hear the cheers, boos, and the finger whistles. When the announcers start talking again, then you will notice that you cannot hear the people in the stands, and they do not interfere with the conversations.

They run the crowd microphone through a compressor, and it reacts to the announcers microphone to control the crowd audio level.

When you are listening to DJs, or to a radio station, then notice that as one song fades, and the other one ramps up that they are both at the same audio level. Compressors are used to suppress the louder audio to create a "balance" in the two music channels.

For law enforcment style of recordings then you will need to use notch filters.

A shot gun microphone is a better mic to use to catch a conversation in a particular area.

Shot guns will eliminate the unwanted audio from the left, and to the right of your target. This could be road noise, garbage trucks, emergency vehicles, honking horns, ect.

A cheap shot gun mic is just a mic in a long tube.

A good shotgun mic will actually have to microphones. One that is in a tube to listen at a distance, and a second mic to listen to the ambient sound, and this will go through circuitry where the background noise is electronically reduced.
