what is better- low lux camera vs infra-red

i have been asked this question many times, "what is the best camera, a low light camera with nite viewing chip or an infra-red camera"

both these cameras are of the same resolution @540tvl and a vari-focal lens.

neither, it depends on the location.

also, the description of those 2 cameras dont give us enough info, is that a color IR camera or a True Day Night IR camera and does it have DSS or not .. etc.

You need to specify a price range. There are some good choices under $1,000, but they can't compete with cameras that cost $5,000 to $20,000.

It kind of depends on how far you need to see. If you're just watching a room, with the right low-light camera, you won't need IR's. But, if you need to see 150ft then IR is the way to go.

Distance to subject is not the reason to select IR. A good low-light camera may do just fine at long range in a well-lit parking lot, for example. IR is generally used as a semi-covert and/or non-obtrusive light source when there is insufficient available light for a particular camera.

Depends on your special needs. If you have a very high demand, then consider about Soundy's suggestion: How about a low-light camera WITH IR illuminators?
