Reliable capture at 30mph is going to require a professional system costing several thousand dollars.

I built a home-brew system that captured about 99% of license plates entering my driveway, as long as the car is doing less than 15mph. That required me to mount the camera so the car was coming directly towards the camera. Even at 20deg off the centerline the capture rate dropped significantly as the number of frames the plate was in shot was lower, and the side-side motion caused blurring, especially on an interlaced image.

I use a B/W Supercircuits PC23C camera, 60mm auto-iris lens, IR Pass filter at 850nm and a long range 850nm IR illuminator. I then feed that image into channel 1 of a dedicated DVR. The loop-out from channel 1 connects to channel 2. Both channel 1 and 2 have the same image, however I have the brightness and contrast set differently. Channel 1 is set for default bright/cont and works during the day. Channel 2 is set for high brightness/contrast and works better at night. I get a 99% catch rate at ~100 feet from the camera. If the car stops in shot then I can read the county and validation stickers!

Hi peter. they are just standard cameras. and DONT BUY FROM EBAY. your in the uk WHY buy from hongkong.

ANPR cameras. first is your dvr/nvr up to spec to use the cameras . you will be looking at 30fps at D1.

think the reason people get from HK and China is the spec and cost is far better then what you get here in uk for the same money its all and as long as your not looking for three years warrenty i would get from ebay (if i had to)

you could always install speed humps at the right point so the car comes to such a halt the image is captured well enough

Far ranging statements like this deceive the unaware.

The 'spec', or what is written on the web site seldom bears any relation to the reality.

Buy a colour/mono camera for $30 if you must, but do not expect it to perform like a professionally built camera.

err ya thats the whole point of ebay ! its a step up from a jumble sale, and people who use it already know that.

as for

"Far ranging statements like this deceive the unaware"

i take it you never brough a camera from there than- or you have a bussnis selling over priced equipment

There are plenty of posts on this and on other forums from people who have purchased (or considering purchase) CCTV kit on auction sites who have little idea of what they are buying, whilst having high expectations of the performance of the kit they require.

I would suggest that our role on this forum, as people who have extensive experience in this specialism, to point out what is legal and what is best suited for their purpose.

There are other CCTV specialists on this forum who have the same opinion as me on this subject.

I do not deal in the residential sector so have no axe to grind.

My business is designing and installing CCTV systems that are used in the public domain with the resulting images required to be used in court in cases ranging from traffic enforcement, anti social behaviour, serious crime and intelligence gathering on a worldwide basis.

And guess what, we do not purchase CCTV equipment from ebay!

I'm working on a homebrew license plate capture system, as well. Any chance you could post a couple of captured frames from your setup?
