Increase our bandwidth in XP Pro

Recommended Posts

Windows uses 20% of your bandwidth !

Here's how to get it back:

Click Start-->Run-->type "gpedit.msc" without the "

This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:

Local Computer Policy-->Computer Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->Network-->QOS Packet Scheduler-->Limit Reservable Bandwidth

Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab :

"By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."

So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.

Works on XP Pro and 2000.

I have not seen any tweak that worked in the registry or elsewhere, not that it's not possible, but I have never found it.

I have tried different things and I still run at the same speed between 4-6 Mbps. Which is fast enough until they upgrade me 6+Mbps in the near future at no further cost. Broadband Competition is heating up again.

Must be like Rory said: Dial up

Don't you just love Broadband progress! I'm from the 300baud days

This edit has mixed results. If the router is using QoS then you will see an effect. (And if the network is using QoS you'd also be a jerk.)

This sounds like a wet dream come true! I dunno if it is gonna work, but I have some clients in South Florida who live like an insane distance away from the CO and his ADSL is giving him like 202K up and 1.1 down. I don't give a crap how fast he downloads, but his upload is messing up my Version 7.02 8 Channel 650V3's audio streaming. I can't for the life of me figure out how Bellsouth (local dsl mafia) says, that 202 is awesome even though your client is paying for 256K Up. They say it is acceptable, but he needs some extra points to get the intermittent audio and video lag, because the cheap bast*rd held back $800 from his last check because of his DSL issues. Although he signed our contract which says he has to give us his "eggs" if we goto court, but who the hell wants to go to court, or more importantly, who the hell wants "old Man River's Eggs" instead of my $800.

Either way he finally said the he would up the bandwidth just to test it out, but if this fix works, You just got your self an asian massage if you meet the iwatch crew in Las Vages for ISCWest Baby!

Man does this sound awesome! I'm going to give it a try!

Do you set your personal PC this way?

Are there any drawbacks to limiting the bandwidth reserved for the system?Will background windows events time out and error or something?

Thanks alot for the gpedit.msc trick.. I am not sure if it worked or not yet, I just tested it and I was 214 upload instead of the normal 202 upload, but it is late sunday night and it could just be no traffic on my local network.

But I do feel like a tv-dinner version of an mcsc with that, I will call you once I totally screw up my machine!

Have a good one gentlemen!

Well tried this last night on my home computer running XP Pro. Had about 5 downloads going when I made changes. The download speeds slightly increased and saw improvement across the board.

_Thanks for the tip.
