Need Expert Help, Please!

Recommended Posts

Hello all.

Completely new to security cameras. I'm hoping if I outline my current surveillance needs, that someone may be able to guide me in the right direction.

I need an Outdoor security camera that will be installed in a home that I rent out to tenants. Because I rent these 2 properties out, I can't have them connect to their Wifi, or internet, nor can I keep a DVR or hard drive at the property. I basically need 1 outdoor camera that points towards the front of the property and I need to be able to REMOTELY see the vehicles parked on the property, an installed rent drop box we have on the side of the house and those that approach the front door.

What camera can I buy that doesn't depend on a local Wifi connection at the rental property, and that I can REMOTELY monitor and playback recorded video via either a mobile app, cloud service, etc.?

Sorry for the long-winded explanation and for all the newbie questions. Thanks in advance for your guidance.

Only thing I can think of to meet your needs is a camera that uses cell phone networks. That means you'll have to pay a monthly fee. Thats just to view a camera's live view. I cant think of any way to have the camera recording so that you can view past footage remotely.

you might also look at hunter's game cameras. They take pictures on movement and can connect to a cell network.

Hi. Why would you want to do this ?? It sounds like you could land yourself with a lot of legal problems.

Rent out a house and you record the tenents and there visitors.

I would not do what you are asking ..... It will cost you a lot more if caught. Including your house.

Hello. Thanks to both of you for your replies.

I've been told about the cell network but it sounds too complicated for a newbie like me. and I would need internet at the property, which wouldn't be a solution to my problem.

For the second question... I would want to do this because I am the owner of 2 properties at said location. I need a way to protect my investments and a way to be able to solve a dispute between tentants regarding parking and the likes, and the only way to do this is by having footage. Additionally, I have a rental drop box at said location where both tenants, the ones in the main property and the one in the guest house/studtio apt, leave their rent on a monthly basis. I need to make sure they don't say they dropped off the rent when they didn't and I also need to see if burglars are trying to tamper or steal the box. What legal trouble can that cause? I don't care who my tentants guests are.

Will you be telling your tenants about the cameras. .?

If you can't put a dvr in the house or use the Internet .. Then how will you power the camera

A couple things -

1) A rent drop box is a horrible idea. This day and age you should have an electronic transaction or a different form of payment. You pretty much said the scenario a tenant may use - that someone else must have taken their rent.

2) My father owns several rental properties and we put cameras in the main entry, hallways and front/rear or building. We placed an NVR in the basement as used PVC conduit for our runs. What is preventing you from install an NVR in a lockbox?

2. Wired DVR kits will be better choose.
