Saw the DVMRe PRO equipment on the GE website.

Seems to be intersting regarding to the upgrade in pps - 100 of them now.

(Although this is still not comparable to the PC systems of 240pps)

Interesting to me was the DVD functionality, replacing the CD writer.

Has anyone had a chance to play with it?

Look forward to hearing your comments or thoughts on this GE evolution.

Where are you looking to buy them from? Im looking for a place to get them cheaper. Ive emailed www.CCTVtime.com as they have some good prices. My distributor doesnt really cut deals on this stuff.

Rory,

Actually not interested to buy as long as the system has not proven its quality / price level compared to the competition.

it has the same board, same parts as the DVMRe-CT, only they added faster recording and a DVD. There is no competition.

I was considering the Kaltel unit for a job and then saw a demo of the Pelco DX8000 this week. Has anyone compared the two systems?

In terms of ease-of-use, I thought the DX8000 was ok. I would say the Kalatel unit is much easier from an Admin and Operator stand point but, the DX8000 blows it away in features, such as;

- thumbnail search on playback (like Toshiba's unit)

- view video from one unit on another unit (like having the remote software built into the boxes)

- nice dome support features like: up-the-coax control or preset call up on alarm (e.g. alarm on input 1 [or motion alarm] can swing dome #3 to preset 1)

- Nice video (live and playback) but, in the hi-res mode (720x480) see a lot of horizontal picture tearing (like looking through window blinds) when you move a pan/tilt or have lots of motion.

As far as record duration, the DX8000 has much smaller file sizes. So, you'll get much longer record duration on less HDD space when comparing apples to apples.

All in all, I love the features in the DX8000 but, the user interface was much too busy for my liking. I find the Kalatel unit much easier to install and program.

the reason it does those extra things is it uses a windows OS.

Thumbnail search would be nice.

I played with the DX8000 this week while in Clovis, CA for a class at their HQ. It was hooked up to several different kinds of cameras including the Spectra III. Didn't notice any of the picture tearing that you mention.

I've seen picture tearing in our software and it comes from setting the camera (not the PC/standalone) resolution higher then what the camera is actually out putting. Could it be the same problem?

I was under the impression that the pelco dvr's were the most popular choice for enterprise level installations. Certainly brand of choice in the casinos. Believe they are the only US manufacturer of DVRs and Cameras (as opposed to US brands that import electronics). They guarantee 24 hour tech support and 24 hour repair/replace turnaround.

I've seen the new DX8000 / 8 camera systems being sold in the retail channel for a bit over $4K.

I've seen various allusions in the forum to the Kalatel DVRs being "slow." Could someome please explain specifics, and if anyone has first hand knowledge relative to the DVMRe PRO, that would also be appreciated.

Well they are not slow. I use them. They are strong and stable. The DVMRe PRO is a newer version that is 120pps at full DVD quality. The original units were 60pps. The StoreSafes were originally 30pps, now come in 60pps also. Which is a standard still for most stand alone DVRs. Most cheap linux DVRs only do 60, 30 or even 15pps in DVD quality, even though they advertise 120 or 240pps. The Kalatel Remote Software is powerful. I think the DVMRe PRO is more than is needed, most people dont need 120pps, plus the price is hefty. The StoreSafe 60pps is more than adequate.

The DVMRe PRO is the same as the DVMRe-CT but it comes with a built in CDR or DVR, same shape as the StoreSafe but in Black, and comes in 120pps instead of 60pps.

I will compare them to Dedicated Micros for example. DM is not real time live display in 9 way as is the DVMRe (at least not the 16 channel units I tested), and lacks software features of the Kalatel's WaveReader, especially the Multi Site feature, as well as the more advanced search features and Disk analysis that come with the Kalatel. The DM is also more expensive on this side of the world. Dont get me wrong, DM is still a great unit, next to the Kalatel unit, it was my first choice until I tested the Kalatel DVRs. If I were in the UK i would use the DM as it would probably be cheaper and still has near enough to the same features.

Nope, there are others, Kalatel (now owned by GE) is a major US manufacturer or DVRs. Actually Ultrack (now owned by Honeywell) has been used in Casinos in the US for many years, not Pelco. Pelco is well known for their PTZ (Spectra to be exact) not their DVRs. In fact, most casinos still use tape due to gaming regulations.

Enterprise wise, so many new DVR companies popping up, people are using too many different brands to say one is more used than the other.

All the big boys offer that same support.

120PPS over 16 cams thats 7.5FPS per camera, thats pretty darn slow, plus the higher frame model is way oevrpriced considering what is on the market, depends if you like to pay for a name and get ripped off or whether you are prepared to shop around

I can vouch for the casino's. We have a couple of units in a casino in vegas, and the gambling laws forbid them from using them to exclusively watch the floor. Now the resturants, doors, ect...are a differant matter.

Not from what I understand from the integrator that got the certification for them...using the RAID and the built-in SHA (authentication of the originals) they have all the redundancy and consistency of evidence that is needed...they first installed in Reno and are getting installed in Vegas now too.
