Need help on fish-eye outdoor cams

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm desparately looking for an outdoor, vandal resistant camera with 180 deg horiz AOV, i.e. fish-eye. Two constraints:

A. The client doesn't like split/dual view. Otherwise GE/Interlogix has a dual-view twin cams in one housing.

B. The client prefers compact housing. Otherwise, I could use CS-mounts with bulky housings.

I began to look into some vandal proof mini domes, but the widest AOV I found is not even 90deg, only close. Help appreciated!

-- Below are some mini domes I've considered ...

American Dynamics:

http://www.americandynamics.org/products/cameras_vandalResistant.aspx

1/4", 2.6mm, i.e. horiz AOV = 69.42 degrees

Bosch:

http://www.boschsecurity.us/ItemPage.cfm?PrdctGroup_ID=81&cntry_ID=47&lang_ID=1

1/4", 2mm, i.e. horiz AOV = 84.02 degrees

GE Interlogix:

Rugged Vari-View Dome

1/4", 2.9mm, i.e. horiz AOV= 63.69 degrees

Multi-View Dome

1/3", 2.5mm, i.e. horiz AOV = 87.7 degrees

Ultra Line 4-Inch Vari-View Dome

1/3", 2.5mm, i.e. horiz AOV = 87.7 degrees

Ultra Line 5-Inch Vari-View Dome

1/3", 4mm, i.e. horiz AOV = 61.96 degrees

Sigh......

On these, to start with, the Ultra Line are not 'really' weatherproof domes. You could use a wall mount but alot of rain will still damage them, Ive experienced this already a while back.

The DR Dome is 1/4 inch but 3-6 is equivelant to 4-8mm approx. Yes it is not wide angle.

The Brute is a sweet camera, I havent tried the 2.5mm on it yet, used 4mm, and it works good. Not low light though unless you use the B/W. Verygood looking on a wall though, even surface mount, you can drill a hole in the back, close the bottom hole that has the wire going through it, with the included conduit screw cap, and it looks neat. As it is a micro lens though it may have the same blur issue using a 2.5mm. It is 1/3".

Question:

Where is it going to be mounted? Eg. Wall/Ceiling

Day or Night or Both?

Infrared?

You could use a Compact Camera, (from Kalatel or Panasonic) then using a Compact Housing (Eg. EMI,VideoLarm,Batco,Patch&CO, etc) and an aspherical lens you can acheive this. Kalatel has Exview B/W, Exview Color in Compact mini size. Panasonic has a couple compact small wide Dynamic Day/Night cameras, approx $295 (Compact Day/Night) and $499 (Compact Day/Night Wide Dynamic) dealer cost.

Note that f:1.6 lenses are not designed for ultra low light.

You could check my catalogue for some ideas, dont pay any attention to pricing, that is local in Nassau, Bahamas for my clients after shipping and customs duties. Most cameras are kalatel, Provideo, and Sanyo.

Rory, thanks for the info and the nice pictures. I'll do more product search based on the models you've suggested.

BTW, there will be street lights, not complete darkness. So one with a low lux rating will be fine. Also, they will be wall-mounted -- some corner (90deg), some surface (180 fish-eye). It's the latter that was giving me the biggest headache. But I have better clues now. Thanks again!

No problem

By the way, Pach&Co has some good unusual mount and compact housings, check this link out.

http://www.vsscctv.com/ManufacturerProducts.asp?ManufacturerID=172

But id probably just use a Brute Camera B/W if it is low light required.

If they dont mind spending the cash, there is always Extreme CCTV's Color/BW Day Night Corner and Wall Mount Cameras, they are vandal proof and switch to IR B/W in dark. But they cost quite a bit.

Street Lights can get away with 1 lux, but certain areas can get dark, such as if someone walks up to the camera and the Street Light is behind them, there face will be very dark.

Id go with the Computar or Fujinon.

Fujinon has been great so far for me. Both are great lenses, fujinon is the lower lux & wider lens in the specs you posted.

Rory,

I'm getting very close to a solution. Now struggling with the last of the 3 steps in your earlier hints:

1) Find a CS fisheye lens (Done!)

I'll go for Fujinon (thanks to dusan, rory and others)

2) Find a compact camera (Done!)

I'll go for GE/Kalatel as rory suggested (it's a compact Exview)

http://www.geindustrial.com/products/specs/ktc_240cce_prd.pdf

3) Find a compact housing (Got stuck here!!!)

This one seems tricky I know you've suggested some brands,

but wouldn't all housings block the peripheral view of a fisheye?

(unless the fisheye "pops out" beyond the housing shield.)

If the answer is yes, should I consider a dome shield instead

(now that the CS camera is a compact one, I hope I can find

hemispherical domes large enough for it??).

Cheers!

You could use a Dome housing as you said. that will work, but depends if you will need to wall mount it, and make sure it is weather resistant.

Kalatel has wall mount pendant Fixed Camera Dome Housings, designed for that camera. Their flush mount housing is unforunately not weather resistant, all the rest are. If you need exact specs or prices let me know ill send you a link with the dealer pricing etc.

You could check Pach&Co, Batco, Videolarm, check out http://www.vsscctv.com/Section.asp?CatID=1005&SubCatID=11 for some ideas.

This may work for you? May require some wall digging though.

http://www.vsscctv.com/ProductDetail.asp?ProductID=56

Once you get the camera right up to the glass, it should not be an issue.

Another option is to have your own made. Plastic companies can handle it easily. They can weatherproof it and then just add a real glass seperately. then seal it good.

hi

i look at that ge camera and it do not look that good its only 1/3" model = 1/2 sensitivity compare to 1/2" model,it do not have extended shutter

speed option as any low light camera need

so look at this model bosch LTC0610/20

http://www.boschsecurity.us/dinionxf.cfm

http://www.boschsecurity.us/images/Bosch%20LTC0610.pdf.pdf

and get one and let as know how vell it works at low light

Its a 1/3" with 0.02 lux and Extended Infrared up to 1100nm, cant beat that in a compact camera of that size. It even works great with Invisible Infrared. 1/3" and 1/2" are really no different these days, I have used both, and found no difference in quality. Agreed it lacks some of the specs of the Full Camera, as it is compact and most settings are auto, but it does a great job. It does have an auto high speed electronic shutter by the way.

Here is the Full Camera version, great specs, Ive used it and it is great in low light, or indoors in full light:

The Ipix command view cameras have a low lux level within an external housing and will provide you with your desired angle of view. What recording system were you thinking of using?
