Backing up CCTV

Is it possible to set up an external hard drive away from my cctv dvr so if my dvr is unplugged & stolen the hard drive will still be in-place hidden away & I could retrieve the necessary pictures etc?

I do not think this is possible as most DVRs do not accept a USB HDD. However maybe a long sata cable might help, but i am not sure how long they can get. (Maybe 1 meter max) A better way might be to get the footage recorded over the internet via a third party

Don't listen to this person, almost all DVR's can backup to USB or an external hard drive. And ethernet cables can go up to 300FT as per the standard before you require extenders.

it is true in some cases ...... most basic DVRs need a manual input to send data to USB

 

I think the OP is looking to mirror internal HDD from usb at the same time .... which in most cases can not do

Could I unplug the HDD in the DVR & extend the cable to a secure place & then reattach the HDD.

I just hide the DVR somewhere in the ceiling that requires a ladder. If paranoid, put a decoy DVR (labeled) in plain sight with fake cables going into it.

 

In my casinos, we record our IP cameras simultaneously to two NVRs in separate server rooms. Protects us from server, power, and A/C outages.
