Non-PTZ vs. PTZ

Recommended Posts

I have a client that is really wanting to go with PTZ cameras instead of non-ptz cameras.

Because of the cost - about 4x more - do you guys install less cameras using PTZ? I quoted 11 cameras - but I think if we do PTZ I could use 5 or 6.

I also want to stay around the budget price so I am hoping that by utilizing PTZ cameras I can use less cameras and have the same coverage and same budget.

As well as the cost of the cams, you need to factor in the cost of the control equipment for the ptz cams, AND the cost for someone to monitor them all the time.

A PTZ looks great to a customer, but fixed cams dont need monitoring - they will always capture what they are pointed at. A PTZ needs someone to watch the screen all the time, and move the cam/zoom the cam.

There are auto-tracking ptz's not used those, but they will be more expensive than a normal ptz, and I doubt they will always track what you want them to track....

Got to remember that when the PTZ is pointed at location A, location B is not covered at all. This is the advantage for multiple fixed cameras over a single PTZ.

In casinos, we usually cover every square inch with fixed cameras and use PTZs strategically placed to allow the operators to zoom in on problems. The problems with PTZs are that they require an operator to control and can miss things if you rely on only them to cover an area and they are aimed at another area by an operator.

I agree with all of the posts above!

Fixed cameras everywhere and ptz to follow the action!

PTZ are great for someone who will want to check on their parking lot for unauthorized activity by internet. Set it as preset #1 all of the time, but if something catches the eye, such as a party hosted in your parking lot, then you can use your presets to have a look around. Our customer has a picnic bench right next to a canal. The parking lot is walled and the police can not see the parking area as they drive by. Someone decided to launch his small boat in to the center of the canal. This is when he decided to get a camera system for his building.

PTZ are great for shops and stores. Set it as a preset camera but when you need it you can follow the action.

Why does this keep popping up in my post?

PTZ are great! Set it as a fixed camera, and then you can follow the action.
