Hilly terrrain with dense forest - no line of site

I need to transmit about one mile through these conditions. Does anyone have any suggestions for a wireless system? I am open to either IP or traditional analog cameras. Thanks in advance.

IP/WIFI or analog/digital does not matter really its the type of trees that matter. if they are pine ohhh bad luck -depends on there spacing and canopy hieght. and how much water is in them. blah blah.....

 

Go for a lower freq first like 900mhz , use a couple of small high gain antennas like 15Dbi beams\panels, and of course run some grunt, 1 watt of power.

 

stay away from 2.4ghz for forest's -you can get lucky tho.

A High power WIFI sytem may future proof the system -again run boosters and high gain antennas. [antenna alignment is also important]

 

If it was a comerical system they would go over it or around it.

you can also "bridge" a network several times.ie make 2 or more smaller shorter wireless connections via solar power. pricey but will help you get over a hill or two.

 

If it were me I'd just direct bury fiber...........

Another suggestion is to use an ip camera with a cellular modem. If you do use rf, 900 mhz works much better for non line of site than 2.4 or 5.6 mhz. But you still may need to put a repeater in the middle somewhere.

If there is Internet at both sides, you could always just hook it up to that, IP camera, Video Server, or single/4 channel DVR with lan.

Avalan Wireless specializes in non-LOS applications.

 

They are ethernet bridges though, so it will need to be IP cameras or using encoders/decoders.

 

Depending on the angle of attack you may be able to "bend" the signal over the trees.

But it occurs to me, do the antennas need to be pointed directly at each other?

If you pointed both antennas up say 30 degrees, wouldnt the signals cross above the canopy?

 

Ie,

rather than line of sight.

AP-----AP

 

shoot the signals through each other above the canopy.

...../\

..../...\

.../.....\

AP.......AP

 

Would that work?

Line of site means just that ..

 

point them at each other .. anything in between can cause issues.

No... though Defracting is similar to that(the "Bending" I mentioned.). I can't explain it, but Avalan can.
