How To Save an Hour (Or More) On XP Installs

Recommended Posts

Thanks Jasper. That's one of the things I was looking for. I guess I would enter that in my winnt.sif and then the system would prompt me to enter another key once installed.

[OemRunOnce]

"Video Insight", "D:\VideoInsight\setup.exe"

This is a section from a Winnt.sif I was working with. The Components section allows more control over what parts of Windows is installed. The OEM runonce section is a little odd, and I had a pain trying to get it to accept a variable for the CD-Rom drive.

Thomas,

Thanks. Do you know the best way to go about adding all the hotfixes and updates since sp2? I think there are 38 of them, or something like that.

There are two ways. One is to find one of the monthly .exes that are put out for those with "licence" issues. Or you could just D/L them from automatic update. I'd go with Auto update because I tend to find it horks installs less.

How do I go about downloading them from autoupdate? I already have all the updates on my current pc. Are you saying the hoxfixes and updates don't work well when slipstreamed in?

I know alot of people who swear by slipstreaming them but I've never been happy with the results. It could be that I'm not doing it correctly as well. I also think it's a PITA to reupdate the CD every few Tuesdays. But we're into personal preferance rather then hard facts.

Is it wrong to use a volume license copy of XP pro when you have a paid license of XP pro but hate the BS?

I just realized why I had never had any of the issues you guys are talking about. Activate??

You do not have to be that big, if you buy 5 at a time with Open License and Select License there is no activation.
